Helping Third World Farmers through Fair Trade Labels

By Timothy Stringfellow on January 3, 2012 in Economics

Fair Trade LogosFair trade labels found on some product’s packaging or wrapping benefit third world farmers by stating to the consumer a message of origin and fairness. Messages like “This product was produced by farmers who have received fair wage in exchange for their product” allow the consumer to support fair trade. The British have spearheaded efforts to back these labeling systems by offering these products for sale to their consumers and informing their consumers about the intent and benefits of the labeled products.

Corporate America Perpetuates Climate Change

By Timothy Stringfellow on January 1, 2012 in Climate Change, Politics

Melting IceThe amount of ice that has melted in the coldest regions of our planet is overwhelming. In Iceland, the Breidamerkurjokull glacier’s edge was once only 250 yards from the Atlantic shore. This glacier has shrunken until its edge is now more than 250 miles from the Atlantic coast. Greenland’s 10,000-year-old ice is melting so fast that the scientists who are studying this happening are dumbfounded. The ice in the Arctic sea has receded by 6% and its thickness by 40%. Ice in Antarctica is breaking off and floating out to sea where it melts even faster. President Grimsson of Iceland requested that people go to his country to see the melting ice first hand.

Encode and Decode HTML with Javascript’s “escape()” and “unescape()” Methods

By Timothy Stringfellow on December 30, 2011 in Web Design

The server that host this site has both SSI and PHP capabilities. Therefore when I need to inject HTML or script into a web page I use these server side programs. I know however that some people do not have such server side programs. The encoder/decoder tool below will allow such users to use a global file to inject their HTML or Script.

The encoder/decoder tool below will also allow users to decode JavaScript encoded by the escape() method.

When the encoder/decoder encodes anything, it will only encode certain characters. While it is possible to encode every character, the process can be very slow due to the memory used to compute the encoding task. The users who visit your site may experience terrible to mild lag if you encode every character.

Seeking Truths: A set of “Run, Lola, Run” Interpretational Proclamations

By Timothy Stringfellow on December 28, 2011 in Philosophy, Writing

Run Lola Run PosterI once heard one of my philosophy professors say “All truth is God’s truth.” While researching the topic of truth, I wanted to know who first coined this phrase. I searched the internet and found an ironic mixture of many people who were accredited for first using the phrase. The irony being that I sought the truth and found that I had much more to think about than I wanted. The truth is that we can find truth in practically anything. By way of example, let us consider the film Run, Lola, Run.

White Water Rafting on the Maipo River

By Timothy Stringfellow on December 26, 2011 in Stories, Writing

White Water Rafting on the Maipo RiverExcitement hang thick in the air while we proceeded closer to our destination. The voices from the other students elevated inside the bus from an occasional dialogue to a muddled roar as we began traveling alongside the raging river lying clearly visible down the steep and jagged precipice below. The water displayed its power as it collided ferociously into the base of the intermittent rocks that protruded high above the river’s fitfully shifting white surface. Throughout the surrounding panoramic stood the overwhelmingly grandiose mountain peaks that constituted a portion of the Andes Mountains. They seemed to be the descendants of a noble sovereign who had placed upon their heads crowns of dazzling white. We had traveled many miles from our homes located in America to study for several weeks in Chile. The stress from the hard work that we had done faded into the distance as we drew closer to the offices of our white water guides.

Understanding the Speakers within Langston Hughes’ Poetry: A Glimpse at the Big Picture

By Timothy Stringfellow on December 23, 2011 in Sociology

The Weary BluesTwo writers, Herman Beavers and Steven C. Tracey, wrote essays expressing their opinions about “The Weary Blues,” by Langston Hughes (Hughes 697). In response, I feel that, like many other African-American poets, artists, and musicians, Hughes, through prose, incorporated his people’s saga. I think that the speakers in Langston Hughes’ poetry take on the persona of either Hughes or the average African-American of that era. It is my opinion, then, that the speaker in this particular poem is Hughes.

Blowing the Whistle on Corporate America

By Timothy Stringfellow on December 7, 2011 in Politics

Addicted to WarWhy has America really been at war these past ten years? Names like Operation Iraqi Liberation and the War on Terrorism sound like legitimate causes, but there is far more to war than troops out fighting. Years ago, I lived in the oil rich area of West Texas. George W. Bush was running for president for the first time and the company that I worked for had gathered all of the employees together to encourage us to vote for Bush. When given the opportunity I asked, “How is voting for Bush going to help me?” The answer I got was “War is profitable.” For the owners of the nipple-up company I worked for, this meant that oil prices were going to go up and thus their revenue (I neither voted for Bush, nor benefited from higher oil prices).

Need a Job? America Needs You

By Timothy Stringfellow on December 6, 2011 in Politics

Are you unemployed or fresh out of college and looking for a job? America needs peaceful protesters now more than ever. If you are not willing or able to occupy some strategic locations in your area or abroad with other like-minded people, perhaps you can make a difference over the internet and never leave your home. Some find that their best contributions stem through finical support, legal support, or simply addressing the basic needs of the peaceful protesters like food, water, and the quick use of showers. I know there are some who ask, “Is this guy serious?” My answer to that question is an unequivocal “Yes!”

Some Truths About Netflix, YouTube, Mainstream Media, and the Grand Illusionist

By Timothy Stringfellow on December 5, 2011 in Politics

Netflix LogoWhy are Wall Street and the media really hammering Netflix so hard and long? Yes, I have been reading the news. I realize that Netflix made a few business decisions that some felt were unwarranted. However, as a Netflix customer my miniscule dissatisfactions do not warrant the bashing Netflix has endured from Wall Street and mainstream media.

Stop the Corruption in Government

By Timothy Stringfellow on December 4, 2011 in Politics

Politicians think that their jobs mean big bucks and these positions mean just that. When these people get together with special interest, they make the laws that will allow their stock to soar. They know what will be approved (drugs and FDA; Monsanto and seed patents; wartime contracts) and have control over the approval process. They use their (special interest and politicians) money to get political offices and then use their political offices to make ungodly amounts of money. Sometimes they are special interest and politician all in one person.
